Lake Stevens staff previews strategic-plan projects ahead of budget season, highlights traffic safety, AI and stormwater initiatives

The Lake Stevens City Council received a Part 1 briefing on the city's five-year strategic plan from Lori Erickson, HR management analyst, emphasizing the projects and initiatives that will inform the upcoming budget season.

Erickson walked the council through the plan's structure, which uses a balanced-scorecard methodology and is organized by five strategic priorities: community vitality; accessible and optimal infrastructure; financial stewardship and economic success; organizational innovation and excellence; and environmental stewardship. She highlighted sample projects and initiatives including a traffic-calming and automated-safety-camera initiative aimed at improving pedestrian and schoolchild safety; engineering design and development standards updates; a fleet and facilities management plan; a citywide artificial-intelligence initiative to streamline staff workflows; and an NPDES/subbasin planning initiative to fulfill stormwater permit requirements.

Erickson said the presentation was intended to prepare council members for a prioritization workshop ahead of the budget process in about eight weeks and that she would return next week for a Part 2 workshop. Council members asked whether —definition of done— criteria are captured; Erickson said some initiatives are more fully scoped than others and that staff can provide a master project list showing status and ties to the strategic plan.

Erickson invited council to email follow-up questions and said staff will post workshop materials to SharePoint and the meeting packet.
