Parks staff launch master-plan survey, set Nov. 15 open house at Astoria Armory

Parks staff said a preliminary master-plan survey is live with a QR code and will be promoted through posters, yard signs, the parks website (astoriaparks.com) and partner newsletters. "We'll be hosting [an open house] at the Astoria Armory on November 15 from 12 to 2 p.m.," a parks staff member said, adding that consultant Mackenzie will lead the session and that the event will include activities, food and free skate passes (staff said they expect about 200 passes) to encourage attendance.
Staff described a multistep engagement plan that will include online surveys, stakeholder focus groups (with the parks board counted among stakeholder groups), outreach at the Sunday market, presentations to Rotary and the downtown association, and a consultant visit to an October parks board meeting for direct feedback. Staff said the broader master-plan process will gather baseline input this fall and move into drafting in late winter and next fall.
Separately, Aaron Moore updated the board that the Estuary Community Foundation has set May 30 for the Run on the River and has a new title sponsor lined up; the foundation is also recruiting board members.
Staff also reported near-term capital updates: a tire swing for Lindstrom Park was due to be delivered to the maintenance shop, a climbing structure shipped from Korea is expected to arrive in California in early October, and a small picnic shelter will be added next spring. Recreation programming notes included a pumpkin-float swim event at the aquatic center (planned for Oct. 24) and open registration for youth basketball.
Board members encouraged participation in the Nov. 15 open house and asked colleagues to help staff by attending or promoting the survey and outreach. The board also confirmed its next regular meeting on Oct. 22 and discussed timing for November and December meetings to avoid holiday conflicts.
