Urbanna town staff informed the council on Dec. 11 that the town completed acquisition of 300 Virginia Street earlier that day, with the deed recorded in the clerk’s office and insurance coverage already secured.
At the meeting staff said the purchase closed "free and clear" and that staff has begun logistical planning for a phased relocation of offices. "The deed was recorded at the clerk's office around 01:00 this afternoon, and we already had coverage established on the property working with our insurers," staff reported.
Officials said the move will likely be phased because the new space is not empty and some furniture and fixtures must be shifted gradually; staff have sought moving bids and hope to complete the transition by the end of January. The town is coordinating utility transfers with Dominion and assessing what furniture can be reused.
To keep meeting continuity while renovations proceed, the fire chief offered the use of a department meeting room for municipal meetings at a nominal charge. Staff characterized the arrangement as "$100 per meeting" to cover heating and utilities.
Council members discussed logistics and timing but did not take a separate formal vote on the acquisition during this meeting. Staff said they will return with more detailed moving plans, vendor quotes and a phased schedule.
