Select committee hears update on major sewer repairs and $70,000 WPCA reimbursement

Select person Jason Hayes told the board that crews have installed a new prefabricated flume at a repair site referred to as Meter Pit 5 near the Air National Guard, requiring excavation and temporary bypass pumping so the town could remove and replace the old pipe section. Hayes said the new flume is down and that crews planned to finish associated work by Friday, with meter reinstallation, calibration and certification expected early next week.
Hayes explained the failed run included a 12-inch pipe that reduced to 6 inches and sits about 30 inches deep before returning to 12 inches; the constriction and a bellied pipe section closer to the pump house contributed to erratic meter readings. After a day in the field the crew performed 23 grout operations (versus an estimated dozen) while addressing infiltration, and crews will solicit bids to replace or line the problematic bellied section on Bradley Park Road.
On finance, Hayes said the Water Pollution Control Authority’s rate changes allowed the sewer utility to reimburse $70,000 of capital costs incurred for the Meter Pit 5 repair and begin repaying general and capital funds for sewer-related costs accumulated over prior years.
Hayes said the board expects contractor estimates and bid responses at the next select meeting and that the town will evaluate options for lining versus full replacement before committing funds.
