At its June 17 meeting, the Deerfield Energy Conservation Committee told a guest it expects to prioritize electrification when advising the town on budget and energy measures.
Julie Chalfant, introduced as a guest, asked if the committee had a sense of “next big-budget recommendations.” Members responded that implementing the town’s recently adopted “carbon roadmap” will not by itself make Deerfield eligible for planning support because it remains contingent on adopting the rest of the Climate Leader criteria. David Gilbert Keith said, “the quickest way to do so is to electrify.”
Committee members described electrification — replacing fossil-fuel heating systems with electric alternatives — as the committee’s usual recommendation when equipment needs replacement, because it generally produces faster energy savings. The group did not adopt any formal budget resolution at the meeting; members framed electrification as their working approach for future recommendations.
The committee did not establish a timeline for detailed budget proposals at the meeting. The group scheduled follow-up work and the next regular meeting for July 16, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. via Zoom.
