Paragonah approves tentative 2027 budget and hires town maintenance worker

The Paragonah Town Council on May 13 approved the town’s tentative budget for fiscal year 2027 and voted to hire Scott Fulbert for the town maintenance department.

Chair moved to approve the tentative 2027 budget after copies were distributed; the motion was seconded and the council voted in favor. The Clerk told the council the certified property-tax figure had not yet been received and is usually available the first part of June; she said that property-tax revenue will be updated when the certified figure arrives.

The council debated whether to gradually raise the town’s property-tax rate to better align with neighboring jurisdictions. One committee member said the town is currently the lowest in the county by roughly 15 percent and suggested a gradual approach to avoid sudden spikes. The Clerk noted that a truth-in-taxation hearing is required if tax increases are proposed.

Separately, the council approved by motion the hiring of a new maintenance employee, identified by the Chair as Scott Fulbert. Members said the position had previously been budgeted and that formal approval of the person was being completed at this meeting.

Next steps: Town staff will add the certified property-tax figures when they arrive (expected early June) and bring any required truth-in-taxation public notice and hearing if tax increases are proposed.
