Hamilton council approves April minutes, hears municipal updates and community business notes

The City of Hamilton council unanimously approved the April 8, 2024 minutes at its May 13 meeting. Mayor Patrick Whearley opened the session; Councilor Greg Allen moved to approve the minutes and Councilor Nancy Wall seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

The council received several administrative updates. Rhett Wade, identified in the minutes as the mayor’s assistant, read unapproved minutes from the Charter Advisory Committee and gave a financial report to the mayor and council. The minutes also note the city will allow only the mayor and mayor pro-tem to attend a Security Awareness class because the registration system limits the number of participants per city.

City announcements included two Juneteenth events scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 2024: a celebration at Bobby Lowman Recreation Center in Waverly Hall and “Juneteenth on the Square,” both listed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the citizen-comment portion, attendees asked about new businesses: the minutes state Tiger Mart will become a Chevron, a person identified as Tyus plans to open a restaurant on the square, and Spartan of Harris has moved into a new location. Alazadie Grier, owner of the Hamilton House Inn, said the inn has operated since 1995 after her parents purchased it from the Scotts and asked for community ideas about the property’s future.

The meeting adjourned and the minutes include signature lines for Mayor Patrick Whearley; Mayor Pro-Tem Alvin Howard; Councilors Greg Allen, Nancy Wall and William Fields; and City Clerk Tonia Crittenden.
