Urbanna officials told the Town Council on Oct. 9 that the town has finalized a contract to purchase a new town-hall building at 300 Virginia Street, the mayor said.
The mayor described the property as a two-story structure previously known as H & H Properties and said the council and staff have toured the space. The announced price was $615,000 including furniture, and the mayor said the town plans to pay in cash using a combination of CARES Act funds, American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and town reserves so no mortgage will be required.
Why it matters: Council members described the building as updated, well furnished and likely to improve office layout and cash flow compared with the current facility. The mayor said the town is “set to close Dec. 15” on the purchase.
Funding and fiscal context: The mayor said proceeds from the sale of the old town hall plus CARES, ARPA and reserves will cover the purchase; no formal appropriation or financing vote was recorded in the meeting minutes. One council member noted the purchase price is roughly half the cost of the current building, and members voiced optimism about operating savings.
Next steps: Staff and council will complete closing steps and move logistics. The council did not vote on a financing mechanism at the Oct. 9 meeting; officials said they anticipate closing in mid-December.
