Matthew Dumbert sworn in as Oakland councilman; named liaison to DPW, library and municipal alliance

Matthew Dumbert was sworn in as a councilman for the Borough of Oakland during the March 24, 2026 mayor and council meeting, taking the oath of office for a term that runs through Dec. 31, 2028.

Dumbert, who said he became councilman after a general election, a recount and court intervention followed by a special election, thanked residents and pledged to work ‘‘with absolutely everybody and anybody … who wants to do the right thing for Oakland and future prosperity for all Oaklanders.’’ The oath was administered in the meeting chamber with family members present.

The council president welcomed Dumbert and announced liaison assignments: Dumbert will serve as the council liaison to the Department of Public Works, the Oakland Public Library and the municipal alliance. Dumbert said he looks forward to working with the DPW and library on those responsibilities.

The ceremony was brief and followed by routine meeting business; the assembly then moved on to community announcements, consent resolutions and the introduction of the 2026 municipal budget.

Dumbert’s self-description in the meeting as ‘‘an independent’’ who will collaborate across the council and community was one of his central pledges at the swearing-in. The council did not hold further votes related to his seating during the session.

Next steps: Dumbert will assume the liaison duties announced by the council president and participate in committee reports and upcoming agenda items as those items are scheduled.
