Franklin County addresses generator failure at courthouse addition; court floor work expected by Christmas

Franklin County commissioners on Aug. 12 heard that a new generator failed to start during a recent power outage after its batteries exploded, but county staff and the equipment vendor temporarily restored power and a service technician will perform a follow-up inspection.
Randy Henrie told the commissioners that a local CAT employee got the generator working after the outage and that CAT will send a serviceman to perform a thorough check. Henrie said the CAT employee who normally monitors the generator has been on medical leave and had not notified county staff that the unit was not being monitored.
Sheriff Dave Fryar told commissioners that the backup battery system in the Sheriff’s Office also did not activate during the outage and said he believed construction dust contributed to the failure; Fryar said he will get the backup system repaired. Courtroom wiring is in progress, plumbing work is expected to finish within a week, and fire suppression equipment was expected to arrive this week. Henrie said trim has already been ordered from Swainston and Mill and that he hopes to have the court floor finished by Christmas.
The comments came as part of a broader update on the courthouse addition and other county building projects. No formal vote was required on the construction update; commissioners recorded the status and next steps.
