Union City Borough Council voted unanimously July 23 to accept a $5,000 quote from Mansfield to repair, replace and reconnect a pipe at a sinkhole in Municipal Lot No. 1, with the borough supplying pipe and fittings for an additional estimated $5,000.
The vote followed a Streets Supervisor report that crews had placed about 400 gallons of dye into a storm drain near Hogan’s Alley and found the dye entering sanitary lines that run to Municipal Lot No. 1. Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips said crews will run cameras into the lines and recommended inspecting up to the area near the Salvation Army to determine the extent of damage.
Councilor James Kerns moved the contract approval and Councilor Steadman seconded; the motion carried unanimously. Borough Manager Cindy Wells and staff will coordinate supply of pipe and fittings and verify there are no other problems before work proceeds.
The decision comes amid council discussion of unexpected stormwater repair needs and related costs; members said those costs informed deliberations on other budgetary matters during the meeting. The council did not specify a project start date in the minutes.
