The Old Bridge Township Board of Education voted April 14 to proceed with DEP‑required outfall and retaining‑wall repairs at Old Bridge High School after district staff told trustees the failing wall was sending sediment into a public waterway.
Mr. Wiedell, who presented the project to the board, said architects flagged the outfall failure and the state Department of Environmental Protection is requiring repairs to avoid fines or potential litigation. “We do have to make these repairs because otherwise, if we let it continue to deteriorate and go into a public waterway, there'd be DEP fines and other litigation,” he said.
District staff opened bids for the work and received three responses; Mr. Wiedell told the board that CMS Construction was the lowest responsive bidder and that the project bid came in under the budget estimate. He said the district will take funding from a placeholder account while legal review from the board attorney’s office and architectural review continue.
Board members asked whether the outfall enters public land or town‑owned property; district staff clarified the outfall discharges to public waterways and that responsibility for follow‑on permitting rests with the district for the school parcel.
The board carried the item by roll call. Next steps include completing the legal and architectural reviews and finalizing the contract award so construction can proceed.
