The Borough of Ogdensburg held an executive session on Aug. 28 to discuss the police contract. The council voted to go into closed session under the Open Public Meetings Act; Councilwoman Cowdrick recused herself and left the meeting. The executive session began at 8:33 p.m. and the council returned at 9:07 p.m.
During the public discussion after the executive session, Police Chief Gordon said, “with events coming forward in the next couple of days we should probably pass a resolution to hire somebody to replace the officer leaving,” indicating an imminent staffing need. Councilman DeMeo and others clarified that the council’s immediate action would be to authorize advertising rather than making an appointment on the spot.
Councilman DeMeo moved to authorize the borough clerk to advertise for an interlocal governmental transfer in the event of a vacancy; Councilman Alvarez seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote with an affirmative majority and Cowdrick absent. Council noted that an actual appointment would require a later vote once candidates are identified or an interlocal transfer is confirmed.
The council did not disclose further details of the contract discussions (the executive session notice stated the matter would be made public when settled). The clerk was authorized to proceed with public advertisement to seek an interlocal transfer or other replacement options.
