EDC eyes World Cup and Foxboro events for local business opportunities, tasks follow-ups

At the Jan. 5 meeting, Sharon’s Economic Development Committee discussed potential opportunities for local businesses tied to the FIFA World Cup and a large Foxboro event. Committee members saw limited upside from transient visitors but agreed there may be targeted opportunities for restaurants, short-term rental guidance and temporary vendors.
David Straus was asked to investigate where event buses will originate and whether routes will include Sharon stops; members discussed using food trucks (via Avi Shemtov’s network) if buses include Sharon. Rob Maidman noted town regulations tightly constrain short-term rentals and that roughly eight properties are currently listed, largely serving as overflow for family gatherings rather than commercial rentals.
Vice Chair Cheryl Rosenfeld committed to emailing Xander Shapiro, the select board liaison, to request survey results and to ensure he is invited to the Feb. 9 meeting so the EDC can review business feedback and finalize any outreach strategies. The committee also added a dedicated agenda item on World Cup business opportunities (transportation and short-term rental guidance) to the next meeting.
Because the EDC did not have a quorum, members did not approve substantive programs at the meeting; they recorded follow-ups and scheduled the next meeting for Feb. 9 with hopes Xander could attend.
