95th Bisbee coaster race set for 8 a.m.; organizers describe course, safety checks and raffle

Robert Donahue, a deputy with the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and safety and course coordinator for the Bisbee Community Coaster Race, said the 95th running of the event will begin at 8 a.m. on July 4, starting under the Highway 80 underpass at West Boulevard and finishing in front of the downtown Bisbee library.
Donahue recounted the race's origins in 1911 and explained gaps in the event's history during World War II, after an earlier fatal accident and during the COVID-19 shutdown; he said this is the 95th running after those pauses. The course covers roughly 1.6 miles and includes several well-known viewing points such as Castle Rock and the finish line downtown.
Last year the Cochise County Sheriff's charity donated $10,000 to the volunteer race organization. Donahue said a little over $6,000 of that money went toward a modern wireless timing system that replaces manual stopwatches.
The nonprofit race accepts monetary and raffle-donation support; raffle tickets are $2 each or six for $10, and winners are drawn at the post-race awards ceremony, Donahue said. He encouraged interested participants and donors to contact the race committee via the event's Facebook page.
