BLM planning updates and volunteer projects include NEPA work, bridge replacement and trail repainting

County and agency staff reviewed planning and maintenance projects affecting trails, signs and volunteer coordination across Emery County.
S5 (agency representative) said staff focused this summer on planning work, expected to publish final NEPA documents for a new loop road and campsites in August, and noted resource management plan amendments are in analysis with contractor support; public review is anticipated next spring. S6 reported crews replaced the old Dairy Trail bridge and delivered concrete picnic tables; volunteers and contractors repaired a mud hole on Hunters Highway.
Committee members outlined an upcoming volunteer OHV project (proposed Sept. 20), painting of faded slickrock trail markings to keep people on main routes, and plans to adjust a cattle guard at Devil’s Racetrack. S3 reported the group applied for OHV education funding to reprint maps and S1 noted the county’s GIS staff turnover complicates map updates.
Members agreed to coordinate with park rangers, volunteer coordinators and OHV groups to finalize dates and staffing for fall projects. Several small signage orders (Temple Mountain interpretive panels, Buckhorn opportunity panels) were also discussed as part of backlog clearance after BLM sign shop staffing losses.
No formal budget approvals were taken at the meeting; staff will return with specific project proposals and cost estimates.
