New Germany council approves Fat Boyz patio-music permits, hears sheriff candidate and local service reports

The New Germany City Council approved its consent agenda on June 16, 2026, including minutes, claims and financial reports and three special patio-music permits for Fat Boyz. The consent motion carried 5-0 on a motion by Lorn Herrmann and second by Thomas Mielke.
During the public comment period, Tasha Van Brocklin presented a photograph of a damaged connection box—reported to resemble a Frontier box—near the Fire Station and asked the city to investigate repairs. The council and public works staff noted an outstanding need to address the green Frontier box behind the Fire Station.
Council also heard from Matt Steen, a candidate for Carver County Sheriff and a sergeant with the Richfield Police Department, who outlined campaign priorities including officer training, employee wellness and retention incentives, and said the county jail is operating but the department faces staffing and turnover challenges.
Fire Chief Ryan Goede reported the department received a $2,200 CenterPoint grant for an EV blanket, ordered a customized skid unit for the grass rig (additional $450 for customization, $1,500 shipping and $21,580 for the skid) and is acquiring turnout gear for new firefighters. Public works noted that one engine (Engine Tanker 12) failed a pump inspection and that some replacement parts are obsolete; parks staff confirmed ballpark netting and a new fence installation are scheduled or complete.
City Clerk Twyla Menth reported posting a seasonal employee ad, reiterated that volunteers must fill out forms and receive training before using city equipment, and said she sent Resolution 2026-08 to the Metropolitan Council, which returned an approved contract for the Small Communities Planning Program 2050 comprehensive plan update. She also said she is seeking liquor liability insurance quotes for the fire department's event and scheduled a July/August budget meeting to prepare 2027 preliminary numbers.
Roepke moved and Grove seconded to adjourn at 8:20 p.m.; the motion carried 5-0.
