Sanilac County board approves participation in FY2027 Community Corrections grant application

The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution on July 7 authorizing the county to participate in the Thumb Area Regional Community Corrections Fiscal Year 2027 grant application.

David Stevens, coordinator for the Thumb Area Regional Community Corrections, provided an overview of the office’s grant funding and programming designed to support felony probationers with targeted services and reduce repeat offenses. The resolution—moved by Commissioner John Moody and seconded by Commissioner Christine Lee—states that Sanilac County will participate in the regional application covering the period Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027.

The motion passed on a roll call vote with Commissioners Moody, Lee, Block, Ehardt, Ballard, Sarkella and Heberling recorded as voting yes; no votes were recorded. The resolution was adopted and will be spread on the board’s proceedings for July 7, 2026.

Why it matters: the regional grant provides a funding avenue for program delivery and administrative oversight shared across Lapeer, Huron, Tuscola and Sanilac counties. The application is intended to finance services that proponents said would improve offender success rates and reduce recidivism across the participating counties.

The board did not record specific dollar amounts in the minutes for Sanilac County’s contribution or the total grant requested; implementation details and any county budgetary commitments will be handled by staff as the application and award process proceeds.
