Committee backs moving up street-sweeper purchase after repeated failures

The Public Works and Sustainability Committee voted to recommend that the Village Board move up the planned replacement of the municipality’s street sweeper from 2027 to 2026.
Staff told the committee the vehicle purchased in 2020 has been unreliable, that the village "spent at least $12,000 on just repairs" related to overheating, and that the unit currently "overheats about every 20 minutes." Staff proposed using under-budget fleet funds to place a $6,000–$8,000 down payment to obtain a rent-to-own unit now, with the full purchase scheduled for January 2027.
The proposal was discussed for its lifecycle and resale options; staff said the typical lifespan is roughly six to seven years and that the old sweeper will be taken to surplus to recoup some funds. After brief questions on pricing and whether a delivered rental would become the owned unit, a committee member moved to recommend accelerating the purchase and another member seconded. The chair put the motion to a voice vote and it passed.
