Jimmy and Terri George asked the Candia Board of Selectmen April 13 for permission to research and, if possible, purchase Map 403 Lot 009 (the Garland parcel) and place it into conservation, offering to pay surveying, title research and legal fees.
The Georges said they have been in contact with Bear Paw and the Southeast Land Trust (SELT), both of which have expressed interest in conserving the property, and that the Planning Board and Conservation Commission support the idea. They told the board they fear a private buyer could alter the pond or block community access and said they prefer conserving the land for future generations.
Matt Phillips, who spoke in support, said the board could consider separating the parcel from the general unknown-parcel auction process and transfer it by negotiated process if that better suits the town's conservation goals. Chair Brien Brock said he wants to consult the town's legal counsel before any commitment and that any negotiation would take place in a public meeting; the board verbally agreed to that approach.
Next steps: the Georges will proceed with their research and the board will consult legal counsel and schedule a public discussion to consider a transfer or other disposition of the parcel.
