The Chadron City Council voted unanimously to allow the Greenwood Cemetery committee to block the cemetery’s north entrance for a historical walking tour scheduled for July 11, 2026.
Junice Dagan, who identified herself as a member of the Greenwood Cemetery kiosk committee, told the council the event will feature six living-history portrayals, including figures such as “Red Jacket” and Mary Hayward Smith, and named performers who will portray them. “This year, I, we are going to reincarnate a couple actually, 3 people that we’ve done in the past because they were very popular,” Dagan said. She described past committee work on a kiosk and other improvements and estimated the committee has contributed “probably, put another maybe $10,000 into the cemeteries.”
Councilmember Shane made the motion to approve the request and Clay Anderson seconded it; the roll-call vote was unanimous. The council recorded that ticket prices will be $10 for adults, and free for those 15 and under, and that performances are set for 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The committee also noted logistical planning for heat and shading, reflecting a forecast of high temperatures on the event date. The council did not attach conditions beyond the standard permitting and traffic/closure coordination.
The approval was taken as part of the consent/miscellaneous agenda; the council proceeded to other routine business after the vote.
