Newry selectmen approve petty cash increase, extend bridge deadline and seek Sunday River overflow estimates

The Town of Newry selectmen on Sept. 3 unanimously approved several routine measures, granted a short extension to a bridge contractor and directed staff to obtain engineering estimates for flood‑related work on Sunday River.
Selectman Virgil Conkright moved to approve the minutes from the Aug. 20, 2024 meeting; Selectman Mandy Berry seconded and the board voted unanimously to adopt the minutes. The board also approved all warrants presented at the start of the meeting.
Selectman Mandy Berry moved to give contractor CPM up to five business days of additional time beyond Oct. 15 to complete work on the Simonds Brook Bridge. Selectman Virgil Conkright seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

The board voted to sign a corrected county tax return for $921,277 after a motion by Selectman Mandy Berry and a second from Selectman Virgil Conkright; the vote was unanimous.
On land‑use administration, Selectman Gary Wight moved to hire Steve Roberge as a third‑party inspector for the Pines Group LLC subdivision approval; Selectman Virgil Conkright seconded and the board approved the hire unanimously.
Selectmen agreed to obtain consultant and engineer cost estimates for Sunday River overflow hazard mitigation; minutes record that if estimates warrant spending, a special town meeting would be required and voters would decide whether to allocate undesignated funds for the work.
Senator Lisa Keim presented the Wiggie Robinson Award to Polly Mahoney during the meeting’s presentation segment; the minutes note Kevin Slater as a prior recipient and that Mahoney is the second female recipient.
Road and permitting updates were presented by the road commissioner and the code enforcement officer. Workplans noted that lane cones will be removed after shoulder work, excavator equipment staged at the Sunday River Fire Station, CPM working on Eames Bridges and Simonds Brook, and that Branch Road paving will follow completion of bridge abutment work. The code officer reported issuing permits up to number 43 and said 25 new single‑family structures are currently being built.
Deputy Clerk Amy R. Henley reported a busy payments day and about $52,000 in online payments processed during the prior weekend. Town Administrator Loretta Powers provided administrative updates including building light programming, pending chimney repairs, outreach about increasing township fire coverage to $5,000 (the minutes note last year’s coverage was $1,500 when $3,000 was requested), planning support through AVCOG, cemetery repairs, and upcoming training opportunities for staff.
Selectman Mandy Berry moved to adjourn at 5:43 p.m.; Selectman Gary Wight seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The board set its next meeting for Sept. 17, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. at the Town Office.
