Newry meeting: transfer station scales, veterans monument research, bridge work and MEMA storm reimbursement

At the July 16 meeting the board directed pursuit of transfer-station scales, discussed veterans monument research and heard Town Administrator Loretta Powers report on staffing, bridge repairs starting around Labor Day, CMP pole replacements, and an expected MEMA storm reimbursement of $8,711.25 (state share $1,742.25).
Selectpersons used the July 16 meeting to address several routine and in-progress items, directing staff to pursue next steps on transfer-station equipment, historical research and infrastructure updates.
Transfer station: Selectman Virgil Conkright moved to pursue scales for the transfer station and to consider a possible sticker change; Selectman Gary Wight seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board was invited to attend a Bethel Select Board meeting where Tom Boughton will present on scales.
Veterans monument: Selectman Gary Wight reported meeting with Craig and Jane Ryerson about obtaining names for the veterans monument. He said research may require a trip to Augusta archives and noted John Kimball has reference books that may be helpful; forming a committee and contacting interested residents were discussed.
Town Administrator report and other items: Loretta Powers reported letters appointing Joelle Corey as a cross firefighter and notified the board that Mitch Boyce is expected to begin work around Labor Day on the Simmonds Brook Bridge, with work estimated to take about six weeks. Central Maine Power (CMP) will replace poles on Branch Road and Sunday River Road. Grange Hall use was discussed; the building is not sprinklered and Deb Webster is still researching the issue. MEMA notified the town it should receive $8,711.25 for storm costs with the state share being $1,742.25. The Planning Board requested information about balances held for performance guarantees in a noninterest-bearing account. The minutes also note attorney fees related to Locke Summit Estates and a separate matter involving Julie Stevens exceeded last year’s $13,000 and may bring the total to slightly over $14,000; the current year’s budgeted amount is $15,000.
Clerk report and other procedural items: The clerk reported 13 liens remain; no 45-day notices will be issued because 2023 taxes have been paid. The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 6, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. at the Town Office.
