Committee flags Household Hazardous Waste overrun, cites recycling savings for Georgetown

The Georgetown Solid Waste Management Committee reviewed its fiscal year 2024–25 financials and discussed a significant overrun in the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) line.
David Polito reported that the HHW line expended 220% of its appropriation in FY 2024–25, an overrun of $4,229.86; committee members noted the HHW line has been increased to $5,000 for the current fiscal year. Mary McDonald, Finance Director, provided tonnage and trip counts: 56 trips for the compactor and 51 trips for bulky waste. She reported that MSW was 5.48 tons less than the prior year while bulky waste increased by 8.61 tons.
The committee discussed recycling volumes: Georgetown recycled 223.5 tons through Lincoln County Recycling (LCR). Dave Polito offered a rough estimate that Georgetown paid about $67 per ton for recycled materials versus about $157 per ton for MSW and bulky waste hauled to the City of Bath, yielding a rough savings estimate of approximately $20,000 for the fiscal year. The committee noted variability in units collected year to year and that May 2025 had especially high HHW collection levels.
The July 31, 2025 statement showed the HHW invoice had been accrued and would be paid in August; the committee flagged an unlabeled mowing line item for follow-up to determine whether it belongs under maintenance and repairs.
The committee accepted the minutes, scheduled the next meeting for Sept. 11, 2025, and adjourned.
