Town of Walton schedules budget workshop, discusses ARPA spending and highway needs

The Town of Walton board agreed to hold a budget workshop on Oct. 16, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. as the town moves from the tentative to preliminary budget stages.
Councilman Kevin Armstrong asked when ARPA funds must be finalized. Supervisor Joseph Cetta said the board is awaiting a final estimate for electrical work and Highway Superintendent Jeff Offnick said the crew has an updated materials list for a proposed cold-storage facility but has not purchased materials yet.
Offnick reported the highway department purchased a 2016 Freightliner from the Town of Unadilla and that crews have been working on ditch and shoulder repairs. Councilwoman Patty Wood suggested using leftover ARPA funds to add a shelter at the former Breakey’s property and to purchase trees; Councilman Leonard Govern proposed researching small-business incentive programs to help retain or attract local businesses amid potential ownership changes at TA’s and Gramma D’s.
Town Clerk Tamara MacDonald noted that hunting-license revenue fell because Gifford’s closed this year; the town’s profit from hunting licenses in September was $224.18 versus last year’s $66.99.
Next steps: the board will hold the budget workshop Oct. 16 and Supervisor Cetta will contact Delaware County Planning to schedule a Green Space meeting.
