Walton approves $150,000 Freightliner purchase, to sell two older Rams and join Deposit on cooperative highway services

The Walton Town Board voted Jan. 13 to purchase a 2017 Freightliner 114SD tandem dump truck with plow and sander for $150,000 and to sell two older Ram 5500 trucks and a stainless-steel sander, moves the board said will refresh highway equipment while recapturing value from older vehicles. Councilman Kevin Armstrong moved to approve the purchase; Councilman Leonard Govern seconded and, the minutes state, "all in favor, motion carried."
Highway Superintendent Jeff Offnick told the board the department received a shared services agreement from the Town of Deposit and outlined near-term equipment needs, including a plow for a 2023 Silverado 3500. The board voted to advertise the 2016 and 2017 Ram 5500 trucks and the sander on Auctions International; that motion was also moved by Armstrong and seconded by Govern.
In the same portion of the meeting the board approved entering a cooperative highway services agreement with the Town of Deposit. According to the meeting record, Councilman Govern moved the intermunicipal agreement and Armstrong seconded; the vote was recorded as unanimous. Supervisor Joseph Cetta thanked Superintendent Offnick and town highway staff for their work.
The board also heard that buying a used truck may be preferable to a new purchase because, the minutes say, used vehicles can present fewer problems in the near term. The highway discussion included a note that the town was considering selling trucks and equipment now while the market is favorable.
