Council authorizes hire of administrative intern from NIU MPA program

The Crest Hill City Council on July 6 approved a resolution to hire an administrative intern, Keisha White, through a recruitment partnership with Northern Illinois University's MPA program.
Assistant City Administrator Ashley told the council she interviewed four graduate-level candidates and recommended Keisha White, a locally based incoming MPA student, for a part-time intern position at a rate not to exceed $20 per hour and not to exceed 1,000 hours annually. "As an incoming student to the program, she seems like an appropriate fit for the projects and the things that Crest Hill is supportive of," Ashley said.
Some council members questioned the timing and purpose of creating another assistant position while departments report vacancies. One alderman said the city should prioritize filling permanent operational vacancies over creating new support roles. "If we are short in certain departments, you should fill out these vacancies," one member said. After discussion, the motion (moved by Alderman Albert and seconded by Alderman Kubal) passed with two recorded 'no' votes (Claudia Gonzales and Mark Cipiti). The council adopted Resolution 1435 to authorize the hire.
