Sand buildup, Stop 22 stair discrepancy and Stop repairs highlighted at Long Beach Parks meeting

Board members discussed ongoing stop landscaping and general upkeep on May 26, focusing on increased sand buildup at beach stops and safety issues with multiple stop structures.

Staff reported that sand accumulation is uneven and worse than in past seasons, with Stops 30 and 23 most affected. A $5,000 equipment rental quote was presented to remove sand at problem locations; staff said a permit will be required to move sand and recommended obtaining additional quotes from Duneland and Healy. The board was told sand at street level appears contaminated and that sand buildup on boardwalks can rot the underlying wood if not managed.

Larry Wall reviewed Stop 22 work he authorized after consulting Freddy Woods of Sullwood; he said the landing is 48 inches by 48 inches and must rest on the top of the seawall with a 45-degree steel support under the stairs. He told the board the stair width was built to code at 30 inches but that the building permit application had incorrectly assumed a 42-inch stair width. To reduce trip risk, Larry said he asked the contractor to install a metal grate over the wood platform at the same height as the steel grating landing and to add railings on both sides; he also discussed filling sand back in at the base of the stairs.

Discussion covered Stop 19, where two boards need replacement and the final step drops unevenly to sand; the board considered adding a pad to mitigate continued sand displacement. Members noted a successful beach cleanup on May 16 and thanked the Police Department for assistance with large-item pickup.

The board directed staff to collect additional quotes and to pursue required permits for sand removal; board members also asked staff and contractors to evaluate and document any structural issues beneath parking areas and benches.
