Long Beach Parks report Summer Camp full; board backs revised First Saturday Arts plan

Activities Coordinator Maddie Dowty told the Long Beach Parks & Recreation Board on May 26 that the town’s Summer Camp, scheduled June 15–July 31, has all positions filled: seven returning staff, six new staff and one new director. Orientation is set for Friday, June 12; applications will be posted on the town Facebook page, at the community center and town hall, and in the Beacher newspaper.
Maddie said there will be no First Saturday Arts event in June and recommended keeping the current arrangement until she presents a formal proposal. Her plan would have the Park Board cover room costs and her time while individual artists charge participants and provide materials, a change intended to make payments more equitable for both the town and artists.
She also reported the board has not yet heard from the EVP about a proposed volleyball camp and that staff are continuing to develop partnerships for special programs, including outreach to the library for collaborative events.
On other programming, Maddie confirmed Tennis Camp will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 16 through July 30 with reserved courts and updated signage, and previewed Art in the Park on Saturday, July 25, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Twelve vendors had already committed; Velvet Ice Cream and musician Johnny V were listed as participants, and Tim will serve as the Parks Board liaison. Maddie’s group will plan children’s art activities and will invite staff volunteers to help.
The updates give residents advance notice of program schedules and registration timelines; the board will review Maddie’s written proposal for the First Saturday Arts payment structure at a future meeting.
