Lanett honors State Rep. Debbie Wood and proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month; Oct. 25 event announced

Councilmembers presented a plaque to State Representative Debbie Wood during the Oct. 6 meeting, thanking her for recent support to the Lanett area, and read a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and announcing community activities on Oct. 25.
Councilmember Angelia Thomas listed several items Rep. Wood had helped bring to the area, including more than $52,000 for Lanett City Schools, funding for Exit 79 bridge repairs, $50,000 to sustain free Dolly Parton Imagination Library books for Chambers County students, local scholarships for Lanett High School students, multi-year Juneteenth grant support and funding for a senior-center computer lab. Representative Wood accepted the recognition and urged residents to vote; Mayor Jamie L. Heard also urged residents to vote in the Oct. 21 election and recognized Kristen Nelson in the audience.
Councilmember Tamalita Autry read a proclamation marking Hispanic Heritage Month. Accepting the proclamation were Maria Stillwell, Trudye Johnson and Trent McCants; McCants told the council that activities to celebrate the month will take place Saturday, Oct. 25 at the W.O. Lance playground.
What’s next: community groups will proceed with the Oct. 25 activities; details were announced at the meeting but no city action beyond the proclamation was recorded in the minutes.
