Lanett council affirms nuisance abatements, corrects prior resolutions and authorizes senior-center grant

Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Wood told the council a notice was sent April 30 to the owner of 907 S. Jennings Avenue and that no one responded; he reported the city’s demolition cost at $6,300. The council adopted Resolution 10-25-06 to confirm the nuisance-abatement cost for the property. Councilmember Angelia Thomas read several amended-and-restated resolutions addressing other properties and each motion carried unanimously.
Why it matters: the council’s confirmations convert prior enforcement steps into settled municipal costs the city can pursue for recovery and clear unsafe structures from neighborhoods. Council members asked only limited procedural questions and Attorney Gray confirmed that correcting earlier resolutions to fix paperwork is an acceptable approach.
Details of approved resolutions: councilmembers read and adopted amended-and-restated nuisance-abatement resolutions for four properties previously addressed by the city. Resolution 10-25-02 (property at 804 S. 1st Avenue, belonging to Christopher and Tina Kelley) set the cost at $7,400; Resolution 10-25-03 (1223 E. 3rd Avenue, Jeremy Smith) set the cost at $3,900; Resolution 10-25-04 (822 S. 12th Street, Ned Burton and James Richard Button) set the cost at $7,100; and Resolution 10-25-05 (509 N. 10th Avenue, Donald Ray Taylor) set the cost at $7,400. Each resolution was moved and seconded as read and carried by unanimous vote.
Separately, the council approved Resolution 10-25-07 authorizing the Lanett Senior Center to apply for a Resource Conservation & Development Council Community Development grant to install new windows in the center’s cafeteria. Councilmember Tamalita Autry read the resolution and the motion to approve carried unanimously.
What’s next: the city will record the confirmed abatement costs in its administrative records and may pursue cost recovery according to local ordinance. The senior center will proceed with the grant application process; the council did not set a follow-up deadline in the meeting minutes.
