Lanett reviews humane-society contract, animal-control ordinance and temporary staffing after code officer resignation

Mayor Jamie Heard opened the Nov. 17 work session and recognized Danz Frazier of the Chattahoochee Valley Humane Society, who described the society's October'December contract and said the shelter takes 16 animals per month from the city. The minutes record that the only change to the proposed contract was "additional requirements for aggressive or injured animals," including taking such animals to a veterinarian to assess whether euthanasia is needed.
The contract proposal prompted discussion about how animal-control duties are handled. Lanett resident Sherry Potts asked whether the Code Enforcement Officer managed animal control; Mayor Jamie Heard responded that animal control handles those matters. Potts said she had observed many dogs as well as roosters and chickens in town. Councilmember Story said she had recently called animal control and received a quick response. Heard also noted there is a pending ordinance on animal control.
Heard told the council the Code Enforcement Officer had resigned and recommended temporarily not filling the position. He proposed that the Building Inspector take over the Code Enforcement Officer's duties for 90 days because the inspector currently has a light workload, and the council agreed to try that reassignment for a 90-day period.
The work session record does not show a formal vote on the humane-society contract or the animal-control ordinance at this meeting; the items were discussed and staff were directed to proceed with the short-term staffing change. The minutes say Frazier invited councilmembers to visit the shelter.
The council adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
