Sheboygan County sheriff, trustees raise safety concerns; Hunter's Grove road delayed and Millpond spillway study tabled

Sheboygan County Sheriff Matthew Spence told the Village of Waldo Board on July 14 that his department is conducting compliance checks to prevent sales of alcohol and tobacco to minors and is performing speed enforcement on Highway 57.
Trustee Michael Hintz thanked the sheriff's office for enforcement on Hwy 57 and told the board that vehicle speeds through the village remain a concern. Trustee Dennis Reinemann asked whether the village should be taking specific action on e-bikes; Sheriff Spence said regulation should be determined by each community’s needs. President Travis Thomas reported that Village Park and Millpond Park are being used for drug trafficking, a claim not rebutted or clarified in the minutes.
On development, President Thomas addressed residents of the Hunter's Grove addition and said the developer's agreement does not include a timeline that would force immediate road construction. Thomas said prior work on the road was not completed correctly and must be remediated before a permanent roadway can be installed, so residents should not expect a road soon.
The board discussed a request to open the Waldo Millpond Dam spillway for observation and study but tabled the request until the August meeting while awaiting engineering bids from Ayres Engineering and additional information about the study Stantec had proposed for the millpond. Trustee Dennis Reinemann moved to table the millpond item until Ayres engineering bids are returned; Trustee Jerry Hammarlund seconded and the motion carried.
Reports from emergency services and enforcement: the June police report logged 2 citations, 1 warning, 42 property checks, 2 complaints, 15 hours of service and 75 miles traveled. The Waldo Fire Department reported one structure fire call in June and said it is seeking quotes for previously approved station items.
Trustee Reinemann also asked the board to address ongoing nuisance issues: fireworks being set off well after July 4 and commercial vehicles idling overnight in residential areas. The meeting adjourned at 8:47 p.m.
Next steps noted in the minutes include returning the municipal-attorney appointment and the Millpond Dam spillway authorization to the August agenda for further consideration.
