The Lanett City Council on Sept. 30 approved an ordinance to levy a 10% local excise tax on consumable vapor products and adopted the city’s 2025-26 operating budget during a regular noon meeting at city hall.
Attorney Gray explained options for collection of the new excise tax on consumable vapor products before the council suspended the rules and approved Ordinance 09-25-01 to collect the tax at 10 percent. The motion to suspend the rules was made by Councilmember Tony Malone and seconded by Councilmember Ronnie Tucker; the ordinance vote, moved by Tucker and seconded by Councilmember Angelia Thomas, carried unanimously.
The council also approved Resolution 09-25-06 establishing a 2026 Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday. Resolution 09-25-07, the city’s 2025-26 operating budget, was read by Councilmember Tamalita Autry, moved by Councilmember Angelia Thomas and seconded by Autry; the budget passed but Councilmember Tifton Dobbs cast the lone no vote, citing concerns about available funds.
Other business carried at the meeting included approval of invoices, adoption of Resolution 09-25-08 for Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation property/liability insurance, Resolution 09-25-09 authorizing weed nuisance actions, and Resolution 09-25-10 to apply for State and Federal matching funds for an airport improvement project in fiscal year 2026. The council approved a Restaurant Retail Liquor License for 1701 Bar and Grill, owned by Freriquz Williams (motion by Councilmember Dobbs, second by Councilmember Thomas). Most motions were carried unanimously where recorded.
In staff reports City Clerk Deborah Gilbert congratulated Mayor Jamie L. Heard on his re-election to the Board of Directors for Southeastern Power (formerly AMEA). Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Wood reported that the city will receive a USDA grant of $46,000 to purchase a skid-steer mulcher. Mayor Heard said the Chambers County Development Authority will schedule training for newly elected municipal officials and that the city will host additional training at city hall.
The meeting opened with an invocation by Chaplain Rodney Jones and a pledge led by Mayor Heard, and the council adjourned at 12:55 p.m.
