Commissioners discuss heat preparations, water distribution and hazardous‑materials training ahead of weekend events

During the July 1 session commissioners spent an extended portion of the meeting on public-safety and emergency-preparedness items ahead of an expected heat wave and several community events.
A commissioner reported delivering cases of bottled water to county libraries and arranging a cooling/walk‑through station at a weekend race by coordinating with local law-enforcement and fire agencies. The speaker said a command post and extra radios/tower support were being staged to provide communications and cooling resources during the event.
The board also discussed hazardous-materials readiness: a commissioner attended a mercury-response training in Marion County where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency participated and shared a case study about remediation of mercury contamination in an older residence. Training opportunities for local fire and police departments this summer were noted.
Additional community items included coordination for the county’s 250th monument dedication, scheduled fireworks and a Mount Gilead parade. Commissioners encouraged public participation and noted logistical planning for traffic control and public safety.
