The Custer County Board of County Commissioners voted July 8 to approve a professional services agreement with an engineering firm to plan lighting and precision-approach work at Silver West Airport.
An airport representative explained the three-year program: phase one is planning this year, phase two covers trenching and PAPI (precision approach) light installation next year, and phase three would install front and taxiway lighting and other finishes. "PAPI lights are' it's short for precision approach lights... it's a beam of light that projects into the sky at the glide slope angle 3 degrees," the airport representative said, describing how the lights support approaches in lower cloud ceilings and would increase usable airport days and training opportunities.
The representative said the county is pursuing grant funding to cover most costs and expects a local match of roughly 10 percent; the board previously budgeted for the project. Commissioners characterized the agreement as an initial planning step — not the construction contract — and approved the professional services agreement by voice vote.
Next steps: the engineering firm will complete planning documents this year; trenching and PAPI installation are planned for the following year pending grant awards and available funding.
