Commissioner (speaker 3) told fellow commissioners that the county27s midyear tax-budget shows a significant shortfall approaching $55,000,000 and said “unfortunately, cuts are gonna have to be made” to bring the budget into balance.
The warning came during the board27s regular session while staff walked commissioners through the midyear tax budget. Speaker 3 said the county27s starting cash balance has declined over recent years, creating a larger budget gap now than in prior cycles and leaving less cushion as revenues and costs shift.
The county27s finance staff reminded commissioners that outside funds must be certified before final appropriations and urged departments to submit documentation for outside revenues so those funds are not shown as deficits. Staff (speaker 5) said final certification from the budget commission is expected later in the year and that formal amendment work typically follows that certification.
Commissioners discussed a timeline for identifying cuts. Staff said they would aim to produce updated projections as soon as new certification numbers are available, with the expectation that clearer options for reductions or rebalancing would be developed in November and completed before final appropriations in December.
No formal action to adopt cuts was taken at the meeting; the discussion focused on next steps and on scheduling follow-up budget reviews. Chair (speaker 4) and staff agreed to convene working sessions once the budget commission provides updated figures.
The board recessed and later returned to regular session; the meeting concluded after routine administrative updates and a presentation from the county health-benefits reviewer.
