Martin County Board approves fireworks for Martin County High School graduation

The Martin County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously May 28 to approve a fireworks display at Martin County High School’s 2026 graduation.
The approval followed a presentation by County Manager Drew Batts of materials submitted by Martin County High School, including the operator’s license, operator certification, required permits and a contract. Principal Grantly Mizelle and Superintendent Michelle White participated by phone to answer board questions. The board was told the display would be provided by Wetzel Pyrotechnics and that necessary documentation had been included in the agenda packet.
The board’s action came after Commissioner Jeremiah Taylor asked about costs and the funding source. Superintendent Michelle White said the show’s cost this year is $1,200 and that last year’s show cost the same amount and was paid for by a donation; Principal Grantly Mizelle said the senior class wanted to continue the tradition and that funding would come from the senior fund (senior dues).
Vice Chairman David "Skip" Gurganus made the motion to approve the fireworks show provided by Wetzel Pyrotechnics, Commissioner Dempsey Bond Jr. seconded, and the motion carried 5-0. The motion and vote record were entered into the minutes. The packet on file with the county included the company contract, operator credentials and the permits required to satisfy the Town of Williamston Fire Marshal Stacy Pippin.
The board convened the special meeting at 4:00 p.m., approved the meeting agenda unanimously, and adjourned at 4:04 p.m.
Attendance at the meeting in the Commissioners Boardroom was recorded as Chairman Joe R. Ayers; Vice Chairman David "Skip" Gurganus; Commissioners Dempsey Bond Jr., Jeremiah Taylor and Ronnie Smith; County Manager Drew Batts; County Attorney Mike Boswell; Clerk to the Board Julia S. Rease; and Town of Hamilton Councilman Larry Jackson. Superintendent Michelle White and Principal Grantly Mizelle attended by phone. No ordinance, budget appropriation or changes to county policy were introduced at the meeting.
