At the March 5 meeting the Presque Isle Special Planning Board discussed the city's Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district, noting it includes 45 properties and that vacant parcels within the district are not automatically city-owned. Board members said City Council is exploring incentive options to encourage private purchase and development of those properties.
Ward Gerow and other board members observed that while vacant parcels exist within the TIF boundary, ownership varies and the city does not necessarily hold title to empty lots. That distinction matters because incentives such as tax increment financing are typically structured to encourage private redevelopment rather than transfer city-owned land.
The board's conversation did not result in a formal vote or specific incentive package; members instead recorded the issue for follow-up as the Council examines options to entice development in the district.
The Planning Board moved on after the discussion and later voted unanimously to forward its planning goals to City Manager Sonja Eyler for the Council agenda.
