Michiana council OKs $5,800 lot repairs, tournament dates and routine budget items

The Village of Michiana council on April 11 approved several operational and budget items, including a $5,800 repair and restriping contract for the parking lot and basketball court, and formalized dates and conditions for a late-summer pickleball tournament.
Street Superintendent Rick Reitz presented a contractor quote of $5,800 to clean the parking lot, perform major crack repairs using hot rubberized crack sealant, and restripe markings. Mike Botelho moved to approve the $5,800 expenditure and Tim McCarthy seconded; the motion passed unanimously among members present.
Treasurer Tracey McCay delivered the treasurer27s report and reported a Pokagon Fund balance of $49,238; the council approved the report. Clerk Anne Heywood presented a check register totaling $126,625.33; the council approved the check register on a motion by Mike Botelho.
On event scheduling, the council responded to a request from Lisa Zirpolo to reserve pickleball courts for a four-day tournament in September. Members reduced the reservation to three days: set-up beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, with play on Sept. 52D7. The council required a list of needed village resources (tables, chairs, extension cords) be submitted to the office at least one week before the event.
Tim McCarthy appointed Mike Mumper as the park liaison. During public comment, resident Pam Schutt complained about pickleball players relieving themselves by the creek; Nancy Thill noted the availability of quieter pickleball balls as a mitigation option.
Next steps: Public works staff will schedule the repair work; clerk and staff will confirm event logistics and required resource lists before the tournament.
