Wicomico County Council on July 7 confirmed the appointment of Kia Safai as deputy director for the Department of Planning, Zoning and Community Development (Resolution 119-2026).
Planning Director Tracy Taylor introduced Safai’s record: Safai joined the county more than three years ago as a chief building inspector, earned residential, commercial and energy certifications within 14 months, and has overseen nuisance and code enforcement, fire-safety and plumbing inspections and front-desk operations. Taylor said Safai has led improvements to permitting efficiencies and customer service and has built relationships with the health department, contractors and the housing-community development staff.
Safai offered brief thanks. Council members congratulated him, praised his work and voted unanimously to confirm the appointment.
What’s next: Safai will assume deputy director responsibilities for building permits and inspections as Planning prepares for a larger comprehensive plan and zoning update.
