River Ridge CDD discusses storm surge risk and seeks multiagency resilience planning

Board members and Pelican Sound staff discussed growing storm-surge risks and potential resilience measures during the Oct. 22 meeting.
Eric Long described an action plan being developed to build resilience over the next five to ten years, including the creation of an advisory/review panel. He asked the CDD to designate a board representative and a staff or engineering representative to coordinate when needed. Long referenced a hypothetical map showing that a 10- to 12-foot storm surge could flood an estimated 45% to 55% of the community in the event of a major hurricane.
Chair Bob Schultz said he supported a proactive posture and volunteered the CDD to participate. Counsel Tony Pires said the Army Corps of Engineers had presented ideas in nearby Collier County should funding become available. The board reached consensus that Mr. Long and newly seated Mr. Merrill will assist and that Mr. Krebs is authorized to assist as necessary.
The conversation emphasized that addressing storm surge will likely take years and require coordination with state, county and village agencies and potential funding sources; no formal action was taken at the meeting.
