Jeff Harris, chairman of the Historic District Commission, told the board the house "is an important architectural and cultural resource of North Smithfield’s 19th‑century development," noting construction estimates ranging from circa 1845 to suggestions that parts may date earlier. The commission submitted a formal recommendation letter and appeared to request planning-board support so the council can consider a zoning map amendment.
Planning staff confirmed the property owner had requested protection and recommended a positive recommendation to the council. Following a short discussion about neighboring uses and an exchange on the building’s age and setting, a motion to send a positive recommendation to the council passed on a voice vote.
The planning board’s favorable recommendation advances the matter to the Town Council for final zoning action.
