Harrison County ratifies purchase of small parcel in airport runway-protection zone

Harrison County commissioners on May 28 ratified a contract to buy a small parcel adjacent to the county airport to protect runway airspace and prevent incompatible development.
The court approved a contract with SNC Properties to purchase property described as part of Lots 1–9 in the Orchard addition to the proposed Baker Estates subdivision. The purchase price is $40,000; the county will pay a 6% fee to Clayton Island, bringing the purchase-related cost to about $45,000, and the seller will pay title policy, prorated taxes and the survey, the court record shows. The court also approved a $400 earnest-money payment to Central Time Escrow. Chair (speaker 1) said the parcel lies inside the runway protection zone (RPZ) and that acquiring it will prevent future structures from encroaching on county airspace.
The motions were approved unanimously. The votes were recorded as passing 5–0 on the ratification, the discretionary exemption for the purchase, and the earnest-money payment.
Why it matters: County officials said the acquisition will protect aircraft approach and departure paths and reduce future enforcement burdens related to structures or landscaping in the RPZ. The purchase supplements earlier land acquisitions the county made south of the airport.
What’s next: The county will complete closing steps with the seller and escrow agent and will proceed with any required maintenance or vegetation control once ownership transfers.
