Michiana council amends tree ordinance to limit oak pruning during growing season
Summary
Councilmember Nancy Thill successfully moved to amend the village Tree Ordinance to prohibit pruning oaks between April 15 and Sept. 15 and to require tool sanitization and immediate application of latex paint to pruning wounds; motion passed 5–0.
The Village of Michiana Council on Nov. 8 amended its Tree Ordinance to restrict pruning of trees identified as oak during the higher‑risk period for oak wilt and to require sanitized tools and immediate application of a latex‑based paint to pruning wounds.
Nancy Thill moved the amendment, which the council discussed as a preventive measure against oak wilt; Brian Cassidy seconded and the council approved the change by roll call vote, 5–0. The ordinance language adopted at the meeting states: “Trees identified as oak will not be pruned between April 15th and September 15th. In the event where a tree is damaged or needs pruning, tools must be sanitized, and a latex based paint must be applied to the wound immediately after pruning.”
Thill also reported Tree Board activity: AEP trimming in the village is nearly complete, Pizzo submitted a final herbicide application Oct. 2, and plans for a butterfly/native plant garden are on hold pending a December presentation from Pizzo Gardens about seeding method, timing and cost. The council previously approved a Tree Proposal application for village tree services contingent on attorney review during the meeting.
