Police: 11–12 trees cut on village land; officials ask residents for tips

The council discussed next steps at its Nov. 8 meeting. Chief Ryan Layman said he issued an alert to residents about the damage and requested that anyone who saw or heard anything the previous Friday early afternoon contact the police department. The council asked that the village arborist be engaged to appraise the damaged trees and that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and Chikaming Open Lands be notified because the trees are in the Critical Dune area and part of village land held in a land trust.
The council did not announce any arrests or named suspects. Council members emphasized community assistance in identifying witnesses and evidence while officials coordinate environmental and property‑management responses. The council directed staff to notify the arborist, EGLE and Chikaming Open Lands and to follow up on any leads submitted to the police.
