Commission unanimously recommends rezoning 1935 Burton Lane to allow multifamily housing

The North Charleston Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval (7'0) of a rezoning that would change 1935 Burton Lane from R-1 single-family residential to R-2 multifamily residential. Staff said the vacant parcel is proximate to transportation corridors and that multifamily uses are appropriate there under the comprehensive plan.
Applicant Kurt Oberly told the commission he had worked "extensively with the neighborhood and the neighborhood association over the last year and a half" and that the neighborhood association supports the R-2 request. Local business owner Luke Blessinger also spoke in favor, saying he had attended association meetings and that the neighborhood needs additional housing.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval without substantive opposition; staff said the recommendation will be forwarded to the mayor and council for further public input at the public safety committee on June 18.
