City engineer: Turnpike mitigation may start in August; FirstEnergy easement could affect Applewood sewer work

City Engineer Matthew Glass updated the North Royalton Storm Water Committee on June 2, 2026, on two infrastructure projects affecting the Applewood/Wildwood area and Turnpike mitigation.
On Turnpike mitigation, Glass said there was no new update and that current estimates put construction start in early to mid-August. He did not provide a firm start date or funding details at the meeting.
On the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) Applewood project, Glass said the team expects a 90% plan submittal “in the next couple of weeks.” He identified a key outstanding issue: what FirstEnergy will require — whether to relocate existing underground facilities or accept an easement for them to remain in their current underground location. Glass said that decision could affect how a driveway reconnects to Applewood and noted that the city plans to vacate the right-of-way at the end of the process. “The biggest item that remains is wrapping up what First Energy is going to ask us to do in terms of whether they want to relocate or whether we want to grant them an easement to remain in Wildwood and that may impact how the one driveway is going to reconnect to Applewood,” he said.
Committee member Matt Coleman asked, assuming planning meets expectations, what the timeline would be to break ground. Glass replied that the sewer district is hoping to begin in early 2027. Committee members did not vote on project approvals or funding at the meeting; staff indicated next steps are receipt of 90% plans and resolution of the FirstEnergy easement question.
No new business was raised, and the meeting adjourned at 6:04 p.m.
