Dragon Boat Beaufort festival raises funds for county cancer outreach

Terry and Casey, organizers with Dragon Boat Beaufort, said the group’s annual festival in downtown Beaufort raises donations for an outreach program that supports cancer patients in Beaufort County.
The festival has run “about 13 years now,” Terry said, and “all the money that we raise today during our festivals goes towards our outreach program,” which supports local cancer patients. Casey said she began with Dragon Boat in 2018 and that she and Terry directed the event for the first time last year; she added that Terry has been involved for about 12 years.
Casey described the event logistics and volunteer effort: “We have 100 volunteers,” she said, and teams handling marshalling, broadcast services, sound production, and event setup. She said the festival had 24 teams this year and named the teams coordinator, Darlene McGrath, as the person “just gathering everyone together.”
On how to get involved, Terry said organizers will announce next year’s volunteer sign-up once plans are finalized and directed would-be volunteers to the group’s Facebook page for updates.
Participants highlighted the festival’s community purpose. Terry said the best part is “everybody coming together as a group and supporting survivorship and, lifting everyone up and raising money for our cancer patients.” Casey pointed to the drummer parade and the on-water races as crowd favorites.
