Hillsboro SD 1J elects Katie Ryan chair and Mark Watson vice chair

The board opened nominations for vice chair, and Director Kim moved to nominate Mark Watson. The motion was seconded and, after brief remarks from Watson thanking the outgoing vice chair, Rose called the roll; the motion carried with unanimous support. "It may seem a little bit weird for somebody who's been chair and vice chair before to return to the role, but I look forward to the opportunity to help keep our district on the right path," Watson said.
Nominations for board chair followed. Directors nominated Katie Ryan and Director Kim moved to elect her; the motion was seconded. Several board members praised outgoing leadership and endorsed Ryan. "I am very interested in holding this position. This board has become very important to me... and I really look forward to the opportunity to hold a leadership role," Ryan said after her election. The roll call again returned unanimous ayes and the chair announced the motion carried; Ryan then presided.
The board then approved the consent agenda on a motion from Director Watson and a second without recorded objections.
Why it matters: Leadership elections shape agenda priorities and public outreach for the coming year. Directors used the session to thank outgoing leaders and to note ongoing district work, including summer programs and planning for the August retreat.
